I guess burberry's dragging.it down..and sainsbury's results were mediocre at best too. Mass pessimism abounds the retail sector at the minute. I see a LOT of good mid-term opportunities there. As ever with mr. market, pessimism is probably overblown.

I agree...about the last thing that anybody thinks about sainsburys is that they're value for money. Does the board think its shareholders are moronic or are the board just deluded?

I'm in at 180...I feel the correct approach would be to double up rather than opt out as this is very cheap by most measures. Even if they come in at the bottom of the forecasts it's still a 6p/e. There's no doubt in my mind there'll be (or should be ) a write off of the book value of intangibles as, well, the current value is utterly unrealistic. Nonetheless, strong potential for doubling up from here and minimal downside, I would say. I don't believe in reading tea-leaves...and I think the market is pricing a company making 350m per year - at least - as if it's in danger of bankruptcy. Seems overly pessimistic to me.

Yes, yes, we get it - the sky is falling in. Based on prof's advice I am withdrawing all my investments and using them to build a nuclear bunker in the backyard. The missus has been sent to gather rations and I shall spend the remainder of the day attempting to get my untoward cat to kindly go in her nuke proof cat-carrier. Good tidings prof - see you post-armageddon. I'd suggest we stay in the bunkers for at least 4 years each - you know - to be on the safe side?

They're not basing it on a 100,000 mortgage. Rather I suspect it's based on the average size of a mortgage.

To further the point... it is perfectly reasonable to have a rough idea in your mind of what you think a stock is worth. It immunises you from emotional reactions to market noise - something I deem entirely necessary.

800 seems to me to be a decent price based on P/e, book value and ongoing profits. I cannot see the future, but it's roughly what I would expect the share price to hit. Is it unreasonable to set targets in your mind?

At pre-ex div rates this is just over 700. I maintain it has someway to go. 800 seems a realistic prospect in 12 months barring radical decline in the housing market...which, given the ever-talked about housing shortage, seems unlikely to me.

I mean, of course he's a liar... He's a London based property manager who was making 30,000 pounds per day trading the stock market in the year 2000...He timed two very brief dips to perfection on this share making 5k each time, totalling 30k. He has also made a loss on trading of 30k before coming back, via shorting and day trading to being 55k up. He;s pathological...but amusing.

Are you starting to understand that you can't predict the movements of the market yet prof or is cognitive dissonance still doing its thing?

Fraud is what could have gone so seriously wrong. And yes, I agree it's extremely remote. It doesn't mean that the probability is zero. For the sake of what should be a few days awaiting the correction of a bank error, I am perfectly happy to sit on the sidelines to wait and see.

All signs are that there's no issue with the company and that the div will be paid. In spite of that, I'm not putting my money back in here until the div actually is paid. I may miss out on a few points of gain in the meantime, but to my mind there is some non-zero probability that there's something seriously wrong and I will not risk it until confirmed otherwise.

It is not in a director's best interests to sell prior to bad news. If the directors were "aware of something seriously wrong" and dumped their shares in consequence, they would be criminally liable for insider trading and would end up heavily fined or in jail.

I fear for your bank balance Mr. Prof. Really, the stock market is a place where plenty of people have lost fortunes,,,if you don't start treating the market with a bit of respect it will come to bite you in a big way. IT always does. Here's the first lesson that you need to learn: You don't know what a share price is going to do. Ever. Neither do I. Neither does anyone else. Anyone who proclaims differently is either getting paid for his opinions or is a fool who genuinely believes he can see the future (he can't).

I do not personally think a p/e of 11, a dividend yield over 6%, a price to book value of 1.6 and ever increasing profits is indicative of a company being overbought. To each his own...

Well I got out yesterday..I'll be looking to get back in if the divi gets sorted out. As it is though, I couldn't shake the feeling that there might be something a little iffy going on and until it's proven otherwise, it seems better to be safe than sorry.

that is most valuable for anyone interesting in the stock market to learn is this: You don't know what the market is going to do. ever. You might think you do; you might have extremely good reasons for thinking so, and sometimes you'll be proven right. But if you track it, there'll also be plenty of times when you'll be proven wrong...and there's no way to know in advance which ones of your sure things will be correct and which ones will not. As such, I find it much more profitable to make decisions based on present knowns rather than future unknowns.

What do people make of this RNS? A processing error at the bank...does that sound like something to be concerned about?
