UK watchdog proposes requiring banks to help struggling customers25 May 2023 10:46
LONDON, May 25 (Reuters) - Banks and building societies would be required to help customers struggling to repay their mortgages and loans as interest rate rise in a cost-of-living crisis, Britain's financial watchdog said in proposals to make COVID-era temporary rules permanent.
The Financial Conduct Authority introduced temporary guidance to mortgage, consumer credit and overdraft providers as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded in 2020 and the economy went into lockdown.
Firms should offer appropriate support to all customers experiencing financial difficulty such as directing them to free debt advice, the FCA said in a public consultation paper issued on Thursday.
"Many firms have been following our temporary guidance, developed during the pandemic, to support borrowers in tough times. Our proposals today will help ensure this continues," said Sheldon Mills, FCA executive director for consumers and competition.
"Where we see firms not providing the right support, we will act quickly to put this right."
RE: The £50 billion future growth funded by the UK pension funds/financial sector....24 May 2023 13:38
"Out of desperation the UK government is proposing to raid the last pile of cash it can find - pension funds"
I don't see this as a raid. It is proposing the DC Pension Funds invest up to 5% of assets in it. It's just another investment fund for the scheme to invest in.
It's not a raid of money from Pension schemes, like Gordon Brown did in 1997 when the Labour chancellor, Gordon Brown, abolished substantial tax relief on dividends that pension funds received on their investments. The financial effect of this tax snatch was colossal. It was estimated that the loss of this tax relief had extracted, in total, over £118 billion of income by 2014. If this lost income had been even conservatively invested, pension funds may have benefited by an additional £230 billion.

Richie
Never tried it, but looking online a bottle of that now sells for £2,500! There are a couple of excellent distilleries where I live in Orkney that produce excellent single malts, Highland Park and Scapa, which I enjoy drinking.
