The latest Investing Matters Podcast episode featuring Jeremy Skillington, CEO of Poolbeg Pharma has just been released. Listen here.
In the ever-evolving landscape of maritime innovation, one topic has emerged as a beacon of change and promise – carbon capture in shipping. As global efforts to decarbonize intensify, the role of CO2 capture, liquefaction, and transport is expected to grow in importance, especially in line with the anticipated demand surge.
Yet another opening in the ever evolving ship building industry for H&W. Glad to be invested here.
America’s first hydrogen-fueled ferry is set to launch in San Francisco early next year after more than five years in development. As the milestone nears, the vessel’s owner says it’s already looking to deploy more zero-emissions ferries nationwide — particularly in places where aging, polluting diesel boats still ply rivers, sounds and coastlines.
“A lot of municipal ferry operators in populated cities are under pressure to decarbonize, as are most transit systems,” Pace Ralli, Switch’s CEO, told Canary Media. “The technology exists; now it’s just about learning how to adopt these new decarbonized technologies and getting them to scale.”
Switch’s 75-passenger ferry, called Sea Change, is primarily driven by fuel cells, which combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity and power electric motors. Unlike diesel engines, the fuel cells don’t directly emit carbon dioxide or toxic air pollution, just a little heat and water vapor. A 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery rounds out the ferry’s power system.
The fuel cells will initially use conventional hydrogen, which today is produced from fossil gas via emissions-intensive methods. Ralli said the goal is to shift to using only “green hydrogen” — made with carbon-free electricity and water — as soon as supplies become sufficiently available in San Francisco and beyond.
Spanish hydrogen transport solutions provider H2SITE has commissioned the world’s first on-board ammonia cracking system, generating high-purity hydrogen coupled with a PEM fuel cell which is used to produce electricity for the ship’s auxiliary consumptions.
Exciting times ahead for ship propulsion systems and potential business opportunities for H&W.
In Belfast, we are delighted to have Irish Ferries’ W. B. Yeats as well as MV Ben-my-Chree and the AASLI in dock as we look-ahead to the beginning of ‘Ferry Season’!
The W. B. Yeats is a RORO passenger and freight vessel in the fleet of Irish Ferries and has been with us for around two weeks.
The MV Ben-my-Chree is the flagship of the The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The vessel docked in Belfast at the end of October for a month long lay-up berth.
Finally, the AASLI is a general cargo vessel sailing under the flag of Norway that has been with us for a short time and will be leaving later today.

Realising Ireland’s Maritime Ambition’ - NMCI’s Seafarer’s Conference 2024 is Announced
The conference, sponsored by Simply Blue Group, will bring together representatives from Government Departments, maritime industry, supply chain workforce, and training & education institutions both nationally and internationally to explore the opportunities to support and grow the fishing and offshore wind industries in Ireland. Considering the climate crisis, Ireland’s ambition for offshore renewable energy is large. Equally, considering the biodiversity crisis and the importance of food security, the ambition for sustainable fishing and seafood is of central importance to Ireland’s coastal communities and beyond. As humankind looks seaward for solutions the necessity to plot a coexistent future at sea is of central importance. Ireland will need to prepare its maritime industry’s capability and capacity beyond anything that it has achieved to date if it is to realise its ambition.
Speaking at the announcement of the 2024 conference, Niall Collins T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science said: “Ireland needs to support and generate employment in our offshore industries, ensuring that our vitally important sustainable seafood industry thrives in parallel with meeting climate action targets from the development of offshore renewable energies, protecting biodiversity in our oceans, and delivering suitable further and higher education programmes, while supporting and enhancing the skills needed to promote these sectors. The annual NMCI Seafarers’ Conference is an ideal platform for sharing ideas and practical solutions to help these sectors grow and thrive.”
World’s first newbuild hydrogen-powered inland shipping vessel now in operation - Splash247
The Antoine, ordered at Concordia Damen by Dutch owner Lenten Scheepvaart, has been put into operation following successful sea trials. The ship now awaits the installation of a distribution panel to work in conjunction with the already installed hydrogen fuel cell.
The dry cargo vessel will transport salt for Nobian, a European firm in the production of essential chemicals for various industries. For years, Lenten Scheepvaart has been shipping salt from Delfzijl to the Nobian plant in the Botlek. The company turns this salt into chlor-alkali, among other things, with hydrogen as a residual product. The hydrogen produced in the chlor-alkali production process will soon form the clean fuel for the Antonie. A hydrogen bunker station has now been built in Delfzijl with a subsidy.
On Tuesday, the Dutch king visited the ship in Duisburg as part of an economic hydrogen mission to Germany.
The use of hydrogen in the Dutch maritime industry is currently in the spotlight and there are several developments in the field of hydrogen production, storage and use, initiated both by research institutes and grant providers and by start-ups and established companies.
Germany’s hydrogen economy is set to make a major leap, with the government about to greenlight a comprehensive infrastructure plan: the 9,700 kilometre, €20 billion “hydrogen highway”, to be constructed by 2032.
The new hydrogen grid, proposed in July, would have a “really decisive influence on Germany and, perhaps, Europe”, he said on Tuesday.
According to the updated plan, Germany’s future hydrogen highways would connect the country to all of its European neighbours, including Denmark, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, another issue remains unresolved: storage.
According to forecasts, the country needs 74 terawatt-hours (TWh) of hydrogen storage capacity ready by 2045, starting from 2 TWh in 2030.
Austal Australia is partnering with Harland & Wolff Group to pursue shipbuilding opportunities in the United Kingdom. Well known for its aluminum hull shipbuilding and patrol boats, it looks to leverage its expertise and Harland & Wolff’s yards in Northern Ireland, England, and Scotland as the UK moves forward with its national shipbuilding efforts.
Last week, Mark Lawther, Director of Defence and Government Vessels and Michael Court, FSS Programme Director were privileged to receive Rear Admiral James Parkin, Controller of the Navy at our Belfast Yard.
The Admiral was enthused by the pace of Recapitalisation activities in readiness for the FSS Programme and was captivated by the size and capacity of the sites production halls.
Michael was delighted to brief the Rear Admiral on the progress of the FSS project and the associated social value programme with Mark engaging with the Rear Admiral on several UK and international strategic defence and maritime key programme subjects, particularly the importance of sustaining engineering legacy post FSS delivery and enterprise partnerships.
