The number of people declaring themselves insolvent in England and Wales has risen for the first time in a year, according to Insolvency Service figures out today. It said that the number of personal insolvencies rose to 30,513 in the three months to June, up from 30,145 in the first quarter. However, the personal insolvency total fell by 12.2 per cent from the same period in 2010. Within the total number of insolvencies, personal bankruptcies also fell over the period, but there were rises in Individual Voluntary Arrangements and Debt Relief Orders, which are alternatives to bankruptcy.
