At the last Investor Meet, Adrian said Fusion is aiming for step changes, not incremental moves, with OptiMAL.
For context, here are some real platform/library licence deals found online:
• MorphoSys–Novartis (Dec 2007): near-exclusive HuCAL libraries — $600m upfront, total potential >$1bn, plus royalties.
• Dyax–sanofi-aventis (Feb 2008): phage-display licence — $25m upfront, deal worth up to $500m.
• Dyax–Biogen Idec (Feb 2009): non-exclusive licence — $5m upfront, up to $85m milestones + royalties.
• Merus–Gilead (Mar 2024): trispecific platform collab — $56m upfront + $25m equity, up to $1.5bn milestones.
• Twist–Ildong (Jun 2022): VHH library licence — upfront + annual fees, success milestones + royalties.
According to Fusion, OptiMAL is the a world first fully synthetic human antibody library optimised for mammalian display.
If they can secure deals even at the lower end of these examples, it would be a huge step up from the few-hundred-thousand-pound service contracts they’ve been landing, potentially moving them straight into profitability.
Really will be interesting to hear more on this at the Investor Meets next week.
