Coal liquefaction is a process of converting coal into liquid hydrocarbons: liquid fuels and petrochemicals. This process is often known as "Coal to X" or "Carbon to X", where X can be many different hydrocarbon-based products. However, the most common process chain is "Coal to Liquid Fuels" (CTL).
We can even turn coal into a gas—using lots of heat and water—in a process called gasification. When coal is turned into a gas, we can burn it and use it to spin a gas turbine to generate electricity
So we still need the coal out of the ground and the Thar project to facilitate that. China also has no intention to stop using coal. Are you aware that they have moved a lot of their coal burning factories to North Vietnam, so its effectively on their doorstep now and not China's. Like covid President Xi just paying lip service at Global Environmental Conference this weekend. Vietnamese Government is mostly corrupt and money often goes under the table to get projects through to the detriment of population but to benefit of politicians bank balances. China will still push through the project because again its on Pakistan doorstep not theirs and they need the coal. Pakistan may convert it for their future power needs but they still need the coal. China can't be trusted thats a given, but this project will happen
