RE: Our Gord22 Mar 2020 06:59
Totally agree Qs. In the years before he died in 1994 my dad had finally started to talk about the war. All my life he had told me I had been named after Gordon Richards the jockey. Turned out to be a mate of his called Gordon Wonham who saved him from drowning on D day.
Later they were on a ship that was being shelled and had a job below decks loading shells to go in a lift to guns above. Dispute being told by Gordon who out ranked him, not to go, dad said something like "**** it I'm going up to see what's going on". Shortly after Gordon was killed by a shell. Dad's life was saved by being a stroppy git.
Still have a photo of him standing in front of Gordon's grave in a French war cemetery.
Yesterday, instead of a pub lunch we had a takeaway from an enterprising local cafe followed by a trip to a local beauty spot, Newlands Corner on the North Downs. Much busier than usual but we stayed in the car, Reading with a beautiful view in front. Going for a long walk today, obviously without the usual mandatory pint on the way back. Without that I might even lose some weight. Lol. Atb.
