Fourth quarter results: Walt Disney reported a 12% increase in profits in the quarter, led by growth across all segments and Theme Parks and consumer products in particular. The results met Wall Street expectations. At its Theme Parks, profits were up on increased consumer spending, thanks to a slowly improving global economy that helped lift revenues 8% in the quarter to $3.7 billion. At the consumer products unit, operating income rose 30% to $347 million. The growth was driven by licensing of products tied to films such as "Monsters University" as well as products included after last year's acquisition of "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm. Disney's Lucasfilms unit said that the next movie in the Star Wars franchise - the Star Wars: Episode VII - will open on 18 December 2015. During the quarter, revenue from Walt Disney's Media Networks segment, which includes cable network ESPN and broadcaster ABC, rose 1% year-on-year to $4.95 billion. Studio entertainment revenues, the unit's holdings include Walt Disney Studios, Touchstone, Marvel Studios, Pixar and Disney Theatrical Group climbed 7% to $1.5 billion, with operating income surging 35% to $108 million. Elsewhere, Disney's Interactive Division, which has traditionally struggled to make a profit, ended the quarter in the black due to the release of the Disney Infinity console game. On balance, market consensus opinion signifies a buy.

BBC NEWS Shares in Merlin Entertainments, the owner of Legoland and Madame Tussauds, have made a strong start on their debut on the London stock market. After being priced at 315p, the shares jumped to 355p in early conditional trading before falling back to 348p. The flotation price of 315p a share valued Merlin, which also operates the London Eye and Alton Towers, at £3.2bn. Merlin chief Nick Varney said he was "delighted" with the strong demand from both institutions and retail investors. Merlin sold a 30% stake in the business, raising a gross total of about £957m for the company and the selling shareholders. It said that 87.5% of the shares for sale had gone to institutional investors, such as pension funds, while 12.5% went to retail investors. Retail investors who applied for the minimum of £1,000 of shares have been allocated 317 shares, worth £998.55. Those who applied for more than £1,000 worth of shares will receive 317 shares, plus 55% of the remaining amount they applied for.
