Retail Sales Plunge17 Jan 2025 07:59
“Retail sales plunged unexpectedly in the run-up to Christmas, official figures show, after Rachel Reeves announced a record tax raid.
Sales volumes dropped by 0.3pc in December, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), compared to analyst forecasts for growth of 0.4pc.
The previous month’s sales were also revised lower from 0.2pc growth to 0.1pc.
The decline in the crucial run-up to Christmas comes after the October Budget raised taxes by £40bn, including a £25bn hike in national insurance contributions for employers.
A weak month for supermarkets helped drag down overall volumes, offsetting a rise in sales for clothing and footwear retailers.
The drop in sales will likely fuel fears of a further decline when national insurance changes take effect in April, along with an increase in the minimum wage, with companies expecting to reduce hiring or cut jobs.
The value of the pound has dropped amid doubts about the Chancellor’s plans for growth, falling 0.5pc against the dollar and 0.4pc against the euro.“
Nice one Rachel 🙄👍
