Brand,
I can't put you in RM's shoes, I have never met him, but as someone who grew up around many generations of sea-farers, I can tell you with certainty, from my own observations, that he 100% has a 'sailor' mentality. And we do know he is an avid sailor from his Twitter bio. So if you consider the traits that someone with a sailor mentality has, that may assist you on your journey of discovery.
A sailor will act without fuss or hesitation. As skipper, you need to have sight of the many things that can conspire to throw you off course be at ease with deviations between the map and the compass (there are always deviations!), ready to make decisions on the fly, ready to adapt, dig deep and push through.
Sailors don't abdicate responsibility, they are responsible for their crew and their vessel.
Sailors have more passion than most people you will ever meet. They have absolute purpose and live for the sea. The chance of loss and thrill of success become cardinal points to the journey, both at sea and building something on land that lasts.
Decision-making - sailor's rarely make decisions too early without all the facts. They are masters of patience. To act prematurely can cost lives at sea, that never leaves you.
What does all this mean? Not a lot if you don't value understanding the person running the show, but quite a bit if you want to, as you say, get a little inside RM's head and his shoes. If you recognise any of the above over the past year of this share, it may help you to second-guess how this ship is going to make it's way home.
The above is all a bit of fun really on a slow news day such as today, but I do take it very seriously too. You can tell a lot by the cut of one's jib! The seemingly most successful company's can be run into the ground by poor captaincy and sailing skills, and the inverse is also true.
