I am not convinced that reducing the size of the company does make it more attractive to investors, extrapolate and you can see it shrinking to insignificance, attempting to become a FTSE 250 company. When I look to buy shares I look for growth and return. Return in the sense of dividends, so in both these aspects buybacks turn me OFF buying that company. One reason it is done could be that directors' pay may be based upon metrics which include EPS, which of course is the result.
I would prefer surplus cash to be spent in growing the business, or if no opportunities are seen for that, returned as dividends. THAT would encourage new investors and make the company more attractive to people like me.
Another reason for buybacks in general is that is reduces the free cash. If this builds significantly it makes the company more liable to be taken over, which of course puts the directors out of their lucrative jobs.
