Of course market making firms do that. Until recently that was a major pillar of how they made a living.
But that’s not Polar and Polygon colluding. It works something like this, I think…
Dealer at Polar sends an instant Bloomberg (IB) to a sales trader at XYZ broker asking for a bid for, say, 100k SNG.
Sales trader IBs his mkt maker in SNG asking the same question, and, if XYZ broker also has a relationship with Polygon, contacts Polygon to see what their current appetite is. Assuming the mkt maker doesn’t have a better buyer, the sales trader will put buyer and seller together.
If XYZ don’t have a relationship with Polygon, their mkt maker will contact the broker who he has seen as a regular buyer, presumably acting for Polygon, to have same conversation.
But there’s no contact or collusion between Polar and Polygon. Nor does there need to be. It’s just a market doing what it’s supposed to, matching buyers and sellers
