MKA seem keenest on progressing Songwe. Looks like the MDA is nearly there. MKA have backburnered its rutile in favour of REs even though there's market enthusiasm for rutile (Rio Tinto's stake in SVML eg). PRE has substantially progressed funding of Longonjo (RE Angola).

I think the MW Nation article was only saying Malawi was seeking to increase the existing 15% whirlwind tax a bit in the Lotus (and by extension MKA) MDA. The 30% (35-5) rate is known about and not an issue.

Not a great comparable, but having just been reading about it...North Sea O&G energy companies pay 35% windfall tax, have an overall tax burden of 75%, and are still profitable.

I suspect the MDAs will be issued shortly.

If the only real issues are tax on profits and sourcing chemicals they're probably almost there. Moreover the dramatic-sounding whirlwind tax (which i think equates to our gentler-sounding windfall tax) is "only" icing on the cake stuff applicable if commodity prices really take off so hopefully can be agreed soon. Should have been sorted by now with scaled formulas surely. Important mind where the fiscal regime is all agreed to in advance for several years although everyone will be a winner on the issue. MKA will doubtless be having the same negotiation over REs prices as Lotus are for uranium.

Indeed. The leading experts in all this at Brum Uni and Hypromag for example think RE magnets is the way forward and aren't going away any time soon. That's good enough for me.

There's many other magnet materials in the running but RE magnets should dominate for the rest of this decade as I understand it so I don't think MKA have too many concerns there. There's many other uses for RE's too of course. And on the Malawian mining side MKA's emphasis could switch to the rutile and uranium etc should demand for RE's reduce. Which cheaper and stronger non-RE magnet tech are you referring to btw?
