Distributed energy storage facilities in the US are set to join wholesale markets and compete to provide grid services after what’s described as the “single most important act” for the energy transition so far.
The United States Court of Appeal in the District of Columbia ruled last week against petitioning from the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and others which sought to prevent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order 841 from passing.
In doing so and allowing Order 841 to pass, distributed energy storage units can now compete with other assets, including fossil fuel resources, to provide grid services in wholesale markets.
FERC chairman Neil Chatterjee lauded the decision when it was handed down late last week, adding his consideration that it would be regarded as the “single most important act we could take to ensure a smooth transition to a new clean energy future.”
“…I’m extremely pleased that the DC Circuit denied the petitions challenging Order 841 on jurisdictional grounds and upheld our orders on the merits. The court found our actions to be well within our statutory authority,” Chatterjee said, adding that Order 841 and removing barriers for energy storage technologies had long been one of his top priorities as FERC chairman.

This comment from a delegate followed our entry last week into the world of web meetings with our IFBF Showcase.  Our speakers covered the policy, markets and technology of the flow battery industry, with their reports and discussions informing and entertaining us.  Delegates came from all over the world to join our live sessions and we are pleased that even with the spacing of time zones, so many people were able to take part.  We did not have enough time to answer all the questions submitted in the live chat, we’ll publish some more of the Q&A session shortly.
It’s an optimistic time for the flow battery industry. There are several strong companies developing flow battery projects – and new market sectors are constantly emerging. We learnt some important things from the IFBF Showcase:
·         There is a convincing argument for the need for long duration energy storage
·         The investment decision for installing and using energy storage is complex – including assessments of technology, warranty and performance guarantees
·         There is a vast need for energy storage world-wide and the flow battery industry has the capacity and capability to deliver its share of the market
We opened a number of issues in the IFBF Showcase, and the feedback from delegates shows that many people want to explore new flow battery technology, storage business cases and the role of regulation and policy for energy storage.  We will be picking up on these topics in the coming months.

Ken Davies who yesterday contributed an excellent presentation on “The role for energy storage in the digital age” @ the IFBF is the Chief Strategy Officer @ Birch Infrastructure.
Ken is an experienced energy strategist and leader in his field. He has occupied energy strategy and research positions within some of the world’s largest tech companies, including Google and Microsoft. He also sits on several advisory boards for renewable-energy focused enterprises. He knows about the fourth industrial revolution & he’s building data centres, which will rely on energy storage. Energy is usually the largest single element of operating costs for data centres varying from 25-60%.
Already, data centres use an estimated 200 terawatt hours (TWh) each year. That is more than the national energy consumption of some countries,
Switching them to green energy needs a switch to storage at scale. Giga factories won’t be enough – we’ll need hyper factories to deliver low cost, bulk energy storage.
