Good post badjob, I totally agree with everything you posted. The reasons for justifying the negative market narratives, around UK stocks, seem to change with the seasons. Like I said in my email to my MP, it feels like the UK is under attack, of course I mean economic attack. As far as I can tell, as things improve, the market media changes narrative and finds a way to present positives as negatives; For example, low interest rates were used as an excuse to knock the Banks, then interest rates go up and the media presents it as a negative for the Banks, you couldn't make it up, although some articles do appear to be showing a glimmer of positivity now, maybe things are about to change.
I'm holding in perpetuity until I perceive fair value in my investments, April 6th isn't too far away and while Lloyds is cheap it gives an opportunity to top up ISA's before going ex dividend on the 13th April.

The issue with losing a company like ARM Holdings, to Softbank, is that the UK lost dividend income that could have benefited the UK economy. Should ARM Holdings reinstate dividends, post IPO in the US, US shareholders will be the biggest beneficiaries and the US Government will also benefit through associated trading taxes. Losing ARM to the US is more than a wake up call, it's a tragedy and its time the Government sorted this situation out, even if it means introducing laws to stop this sort of thing happening in the future.

It's highly unlikely they'd go after existing ISA holdings, which would be ringfenced under an ISA limit scenario, but they would likely tax further top ups if a limit was set up. The more likely scenario is that they'd reduce the ISA allowance, rather than target a maximum level within existing ISA's, so existing ISA holders would keep the tax benefit on their existing savings and stocks. My personal guess is that they wont do anything to ISA's, as it encourages savings.
If you want to reduce your holdings, that's your choice, but that choice wouldn't suit everyone .

My feeling is the share price could go higher, or lower throughout tomorrow and close Up, down, or at the same price as Friday's close.

We need to become medieval in protecting our intellectual Property rights, and ensure that companies funded through University research programs are prevented from being bought up by foreign companies, or listing abroad; At the same time we should incentivise large UK companies to take stakes in our home grown innovative startups. We seem pretty good at neutering UK private investment and preventing the growth of our own tech giants. I think its about time the country implemented much more radical policies across the board.

I haven't read the article, as it's behind a paywall, but ARM isn't a publicly listed company, it's currently wholly owned by Softbank, so is that paragraph relevant in this particular case?

No one can advise you on that, I assume then the value of shares sold were £12,370? Since the CGT allowance is £12,300 for the current tax year.
You would have to buy a good few shares, involving stamp duty and dealing charges, and then hope the price drops enough to give you a sufficient loss.
It would be quicker and easier to do the self assessment online form, it's really easy and takes very little time. I've done a few self assessments over the years, its well worth doing for the experience, and if you get it wrong you can clear the form before submitting and start again. It isn't much trouble at all and you may even get a rebate once your other income is taken into consideration.

Clearly that's incorrect. If Ukraine can kill 10 or 20 Russians for every man they lose, who do you think will run out of men first? The Russians are beatable as long as the war remains conventional, if they use Tactical Nukes then it may lead to a stalemate, or the west may decide to equip the Ukrainians with Tactical Nukes in response. I noticed someone say earlier that Russia could give Nato a run for its money in a war, I think that's delusional since the US alone could wipe the floor with Russia in no time at all. The US have more firepower, better tech and better trained soldiers than Russia, in conventional terms the US would wipe out Russian forces in a matter of weeks.

Depends on the income generated and your personal tax situation. You could hold shares in certificate form, without charges, and receive income tax free if it's below the tax allowance thresholds, but I can't see many in that situation. As far as account charges, for anyone earning a good dividend income you may as well pay the share account/ISA administration charge.

I'm not a Financial Advisor, so I can only give a layperson's opinion.

Personally, I wish I'd utilised ISA's from the start, as we have half of our shares in my wife's standard share dealing account; The reason we didn't use ISA's, is because she has no other income and it was free to have a standard account until 3 or 4 years ago. Now, like you, we are looking at incrementally moving shares into our ISA's. Rather than using the brokers Bed & ISA service, we are looking at buying the shares in the ISA's first, then selling out of the share dealing account when the price rises above the ISA purchase price and hopefully covering the stamp duty and dealing charges. This isn't financial advice, it's just what we're hoping to achieve.

I emailed my MP this morning, I'm invested in BT but that isn't the reason I mentioned them:

Something's gone wrong with this country, our most innovative companies are disappearing like rats leaving a sinking ship, what will Government do to stop the rot? Companies like Cadbury's gone, ARM sold to Softbank and now pursuing a US only listing. Not only are we allowing our innovative Jewels to be exported abroad, we appear to be on a mission to destroy our large service companies in the name of "Competition". BT is being regulated to death under OFCOM's boot with its infrastructure advantage all but decimated, and although BT partners with many new innovative companies, through its Adastral Park R&D base, it would never be able to build itself into a giant like Alphabet, or Microsoft, because the UK doesn't support the businesses headquartered here, or businesses created here. Microsoft recently acquired a Hollow Core Fibre company called Luminesity, who BT have been partnering with, no doubt the UK will lose the company completely along with many other startups disappearing before they can grow and benefit the UK.
Our universities are well funded, R&D innovation is good, but it seems the controls are insufficient to ensure innovation stays in this country. Our manufacturing base seems to have all but gone and we appear to be doing our best to nobble our big service companies to ensure they can't afford to invest in UK innovation themselves, so the US tech giants just move in and grab the spoils. The British Volt collapse could lead to the UK losing all EV manufacturing to other countries. It's obvious that UK productivity is low, because we hardly produce anything.
It almost feels like the UK is under attack. The Government appears to have done everything to support the big City Institutions, and allowed manufacturing to die a slow death, yet the City institutions have no loyalty to the UK and use their leverage to shape UK policy and punish the UK when it doesn't get its own way, look at what happened to Lizz Truss.
I'm probably wasting my time in airing my opinion, but I felt the need to vent in response to the ARM Holdings news.

Tell that to someone who lives in Turkey, or any other country where hyperinflation has caused issues. Cash is trash when it comes to protecting your Financial Security, since it doesn't hold its value when high inflation takes hold. The only way to protect your financial status is to invest in safe stocks, or commodities like Gold. When high inflation takes hold stock valuations increase with it, while cash purchasing power reduces. The only time cash would be useful to provide security, is in a period of rampant deflation and that hardly ever happens, since they'll just print more money to stoke inflation.

What utter and complete B0110x, it has nothing whatsoever to do with Brexit and more about Government failure to protect UK business and manufacturing. The problem with the UK Government is their devotion to City institutions and ignoring the rest of UK. The Brexit vote was a vote for change and it's about time the country changed its focus onto industry and away from Finance, but that would never happen as a member of the EU. It's clear UK politicians have either been incompetent, or negligent, in focusing on Financial institutions in London, and letting industry be exported from the regions and disappear abroad. We were still in the EU when Kraft took over Cadbury and closed the UK plants in short order. Germany not happy with taking over many of our manufacturers, also took over many of our utilities along with the French and the Spanish. It's bordering on criminal what UK Governments of all parties have allowed to happen to industry in this country, but it has nothing to do with Brexit.

People have different goals and investment styles, it may suit some to invest in "safe" dividend stocks over the long term. If an investor thinks a stock is undervalued, paying decent dividends, and perceives that the company has a good forward looking business plan, why not hold forever? Reinvest while the share price is depressed, taking income when the price recovers. It might be unfashionable to invest for income, rather than growth, but investing for income is an established investment style.
