Morning Terry If you divide anything by 100% you get one. But in the case of a 100 for 1 share split you get 100 new shares for each old one. As it affects the company's total shareholding you are initially no better nor no worse off. It doe increase liquidity because if the share was £100 then you had to sell at least 1 to trade. In a share split you can sell £10, £20 worth. On the other hand high nominal value shares tend in my view to do better as they are harder to buy and sell for many investors, The above is true too for a share consolidation.
