Dear Norway,
I don’t know whether to envy you, thank you, or beg you to stop reminding us of what we could have been. You took the same gift we had — North Sea oil — and turned it into security, prosperity, and vision. We took it and burned through it like fools at a fairground, high on temporary wealth, blind to the future. While you built a sovereign wealth fund of over £1.3 trillion, we built nothing. Not a safety net, not a plan, not even a legacy. You gave every Norwegian £235,000 of future stability. We gave our children a debt-ridden shell and a windfall tax tantrum dressed up as policy. You invested. We outsourced. You nurtured your energy industry. We slapped it with levies and declared it dead. Now we rely on you — for gas, for oil, even for investment in our capital’s real estate. We send you £20 billion a year, and you send us the bill for our short-sightedness. And the cruelest irony? You’re going green better than we are. You’re using oil money to fund the transition. Carbon capture. Offshore wind. Electric shipping. While we self-flagellate and fumble our way through incoherent energy plans, you walk a steady path, eyes open, future-facing.
How did we become a nation that mocks pragmatism and worships gestures?
How did we let ideology blind us to sovereignty, stability, and common sense? Fifty years from now, you’ll be thriving — green, rich, secure. We’ll still be arguing over grid failures, imports, and who to tax next. So yes, dear Norway — enjoy our money. We clearly didn’t know what to do with it.
With admiration (and no small amount of shame),
The United Kingdom
– A nation that had it all, and let it go.
