I had in mind ordinary corporate bonds, not convertible bonds, so there would be no shorting agenda involved. Those of us who take on corporate debt have done so before facing equally great risk in the banking and property sectors during the financial crisis. The lenders need to see that some of us are prepared to put our own capital to work on risk-based assets and that they have some competition.

I would suggest that a corporate bond with a 10 year duration and a 5-6% coupon would, in today's low interest environment, fly off the shelves and could easily raise over 500 million - 1 billion. I would take £200 K worth.

durcellAA, it might cost a pretty big loss if by then the SP is much higher than the price at which the shorting took place.

this is just what was need prior to a price breakout, because the shares can be used to let institutions into much greater holdings at the current price and/or return shares borrowed by shorters to their original owners. it suggests all the ducks are at last beginning to line up in a row. at that point the sp is set up to rise.

or a large wad of short positions being closed by returning borrowed shares back to their owners?

I would welcome fund raising through a discounted share offering and have made provision for doubling my holding based on the current share price.

If there was no plan B that would be a lever to be used by lenders to get SXX to sign up to more desperate terms for stg2 than might otherwise be the case

What is wrong is doing the buyback outside a tax-free wrapper and not declaring the taxable event

Its not illegal, but it is a taxable event if the buy-back within 30 days is not done within the framework of a tax-free wrapper (ISA, SIPP)

using spread betting on this share is a good way to loose money because stops are so easily taken out.
