You all talk as if I have no investment here. I do and its still very significant. If a good announcement came through tomorrow I'd be more than delighted and satisfied for me and all of you.. The one thing I have learned over the years about investing is to not be too greedy. I have in the mean time put enough aside to take part in any equity placing should it happen. It is those who you think are your loyal investing companions who are reducing the price of the share by selling. Not all of them are as sure as some of you. Otherwise why would they be selling? I did by the way stick my foot into a few more today - it seems the time to buy is at the end of the day when all the amateur day traders are exiting.

Casapinos - I couldn't agree more. There is real stress in the financial system at the moment (dollar liquidity, China shadow banking with its back to the wall, EM indexes just gone into bear territory) not to mention a few geopolitical problems, and these all conspire to make concluding sales deals and funding arrangements all the more difficult. A flexible risk management approach to one's own investments is clearly wise.

LL - what do you see as the mechanism for equities - placement at a discount or a rights issue with little or no discount, but the ability to sell the rights on to a third party

I could equally well be a lender of capital. What return should I receive for making you twice as rich? If it's not enough, perhaps I and others like me should bugger off else where and your initial investment will all be for nothing.

Andy, credit world-wide is tightening and dollar liquidity is being drained from the money markets and that will further impact the availability of credit. I have always thought that the dividend expectations of some private shareholders in relation to the amount of actual capital they have put up (as opposed to the number of shares they hold) is unrealistic, and when you think about it, the biggest capital risk per share has always been taken by the investors (mostly recent) that have paid the highest share prices. Giving them the opportunity to share in the dividend returns in return for putting up another two thirds of the then share capital seems an appropriate form of risk sharing.

In fact the more i think about it, the more you can envision equity schemes that are attractive to share holders, and at the same time satisfy the BOD objective to get greater institutional participation. If each share was given the right to purchase two additional shares at say a 2p discount each to the current SP if exercised or a 2p payment to the shareholder to sell those rights toanother party, everyone could benefit.

LL, I think you are right and my guess is that it will be a two for 1 equity issue. I have prepared for this eventuality. It is after all only right that if share holders are going to benefit from an improved share price, they should have more skin in the game for bringing that about. I don't think HMG would provide any guarantee cover without shareholders further stepping up to the plate.

RuSirius, it's not only the 5 million share trade yesterday. there were two 5 million trades at the same price before market open this morning. some sirius buying going on here.

perhaps those of us who like bond investments should make pledges to the SXX BOD that enable SXX to be taken private. that would shake the shorters out of bed.

My guess is that a large placing will be organised behind doors with the intention of significantly increasing the proportion of institutional holdings (a stated CF goal) as a route to minimising the ongoing impact of PIs who get twitchy at the slightest sign of anything negative.

The whole point about SIPPs is that you don't have to convert to an annuity ever!
