Genedrive Plc. Aminoglycoside antibiotics can damage adults too >>13 Mar 2026 14:30
Key Aspects of Aminoglycosides:
Mechanism of Action: They bind to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, leading to misreading of mRNA and premature termination of protein synthesis.
Spectrum: Highly active against aerobic Gram-negative bacilli, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and some Gram-positive bacteria, like
Staphylococci
Administration: Typically given intravenously or intramuscularly (drip or injection) due to poor absorption in the gut.
Key Examples: Gentamicin (commonly used), Tobramycin (often used in bronchiectasis), Amikacin, Streptomycin, and Neomycin.
Toxicity/Monitoring: Because they can cause permanent hearing loss or renal failure, patients are closely monitored with blood tests to ensure therapeutic levels are achieved without exceeding safe limits.
Precautions and Side Effects:
Ototoxicity: ****Can damage the eighth cranial nerve, leading to dizziness, vertigo, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or hearing loss.****.
