Rant incoming. The conceit, the arrogance. On the recent “Is Net Zero a toxic brand” programme on radio 4’s Rare Earths show, Dodgy Dr Simon “9 times cheaper” Evans in answer to the question; What is Net Zero?, said: “NZ is literally the only way to stop global warming getting worse according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a collection of the world’s best climate scientists. That being true, there is no sense to say you’re a NZ sceptic but not a climate sceptic. If you’re against NZ you’re against stopping climate change. Unless the world reaches NZ emissions global warming will keep getting worse”.
The point is not whether emissions affect the climate, but first how these scientists can be so sure of the accuracy of the predictions they make. They come up with arbitrary targets, like the 1.5c rise in temperature, and these targets then are not up for discussion but become gospel There NZ targets and timelines. Secondly, for them, the scientists, their targets overrule everything else without taking account of other trade-offs, such as the way of life of “developed” societies and the aspirations of the “developing world”. They, the targets, feel like a Trojan Horse for environmental, societal, and demographic change. It’s fair enough to argue for this if they want, but make it clear so people understand and can make informed decisions and choices. It comes across as repent or face hellfire, and I thought we had gone beyond that, They are at it again today with alarmist and scaremongering statements: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn4l927dj5zo “The Earth COULD be DOOMED to breach the SYMBOLIC 1.5C warming limit in as little as three years at current levels of carbon dioxide emissions”. What about statements the other way round showing the benefits hydrocarbons have brought to billions and could continue to bring to billions more? I understand these scientists have a job to do (and keep) and therefore they need to stay relevant and keep the issue in the public’s mind, but they and their followers position themselves as the all-knowing High Priests who must be listened to and obeyed otherwise we are… doomed. I can see the way it will develop… in a few years, these scientists will say you are still here because you listened, you repented and bought an EV and installed a Heat Pump.
