SpaceX and helium12 Jun 2026 14:03
Since all anyone seems to be able to think about at the moment is SpaceX, I thought I'd ask about SpaceX and helium. Here's an extract from response. (I wonder if they have any thoughts about securing their own US-based supply?!):
SpaceX currently requires helium for its Falcon 9 rockets, which consume massive quantities for pre-flight leak testing and to pressurize propellant tanks during flight.
Each Falcon 9 launch requires a significant volume of gaseous helium (stored in Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels) to backfill fuel and oxidizer tanks as they empty. This prevents the large tanks from collapsing or imploding in flight.
The aerospace, AI, and healthcare industries have recently faced a global helium squeeze due to tariffs and geopolitical disruptions, such as in the Middle East. While the Falcon 9 continues to fly dozens of times per year, SpaceX's heavy reliance on helium makes them vulnerable to price volatility and potential supply chain bottlenecks.
