WELL Seeing I am mechanically minded, I've done some research.
SIDETRACK WELLS (Something I assume the Bod will have considered for KW1)
"A typical operation is to sidetrack a well. This is where a well has already been drilled or partly drilled and there is a need to exit out of one side of the well to a different target. A sidetrack may be required if there is an object stuck in the original hole, which cannot be fished out. In producing fields, an existing well may be sidetracked if there is no further use for that well, e.g., the oil well has watered out. A window will be cut in the casing of the original well by a special milling assembly, and drilling will then proceed out of the window toward a new target."
DESIGNER WELLS (I now understand what the Bod meant by designing the well for Chikumbi1 and this would be the answer to the question I posed last night about being able to extract both oil and gas at the same time! - Obviously a carefully thought out design is required if we are indeed targeting both! - Not a fag packet calculation over a pint at lunchtime!)
"Designer wells are types of high-angle or horizontal wells that have more than one intended target. This makes them more cost effective because the individual targets would have otherwise required several conventional wells to drain them effectively. One aim of a designer well could be to penetrate and drain more than one fault block. In mature fields, multitarget infill wells can increase the chances of finding an economic volume of oil. For example, in the Oseberg field, Norwegian North Sea, a designer well successfully targeted and lined up several fluvial channel sandstone bodies"
This is all I've found so far but Dunder put forward that Caroll2 rig was wrong from the start because of its lack of power! At this point unless proven otherwise, I can't accept that because it was certainly powerful enough to reach its target zone. Whether casing design was an issue or not is another question, along with whether the over mudding was down to the type of rig used, or simple human miscalculation! TBH, looking backwards is not going to help us, so I would prefer to be looking at forward thinking questions for the AGM because I'm not sure whether those same questions were asked last year Pete or Irish to name but two may have an answer to that?
