Small investors posting on online forums were enthusiastic about Mode’s prospects, with one describing the announcement as a “monster” of a stock exchange filing and another saying: “It’s definitely all starting to happen here”.

Another investor suggested on Twitter that if Mode “could announce Amazon, this share would swiftly become a ‘retirement stock’” to which Rowland replied: “We have made contact @modeplc @AmazonUK”.

Mode’s spokesman did not elaborate when asked for more information about the company’s dealings with the American online retail group. An Amazon spokesman declined to comment.

Mode said it was expanding the offer next year “as part of a standalone affiliate product” and told investors: “Retailers at launch will include Ocado, Homebase and Boots enabling millions of customers in the UK to earn bitcoin with everyday purchases.”

However, all three companies disputed Mode’s announcement when approached by The Times. Ocado said “we’re not involved in this” and Homebase said it “is not involved in any projects with Mode”.

Boots said: “Boots is not involved with this scheme. We have not been directly approached by Mode and they have used our name without permission in their press release and marketing materials.”
