RE: Over the sticks or the Flat.7 Dec 2020 20:41
Hi guys, Johnno , your son is spot on with what he is is saying. Depending on what stage the horse is at in it's development and how much you wish to spend the Breeze ups are a good place to start. It is no good as a novice trying to go and buy but better to speak to an agent or trainer. When I buy I go very much by breeding and temperament. Price does matter but its no good trying to compete with the big guys in racing unless your in with one. Jumpers are usually produced at a slightly later age and flat horses are usually on the track as 2 year olds. I suggest that if it is something we intend to look at as a syndicate we talk to a trainer who is current. First we need to decide on National Hunt (jumps) or flat. In terms of jockey, you can pay for any jockey to ride the horse if they are available but the top ones will usually only take top chances if they are not riding for a particular stable. In other words if Holly was approaches depending on if it fitted in with her plans she may well except. Jockeys have agents who deal with this stuff. Keep in mind that jump jockeys and flat jockeys don't to both they either flat or jump. (nearly all anyway) Does that help?
