Teknaf to Tentulia economic corridor on the horizon

ADB pitches $79 billion plan over 20-year period

The proposed corridor would connect Matarbari, Chattogram, Mirsharai, Dhaka North and South, Gazipur, Bogura, Rangpur, Dinajpur and Tentulia. Development activities would span a 100-kilometre belt -- 50 kilometres on each side of the route -- covering 44 surrounding districts.

Special focus would be given to building suitable health, education, power and energy infrastructure so that people would be compelled to shift from Dhaka and Chattogram.

In its 51-point election manifesto, the BNP pledged to reduce population density in Dhaka by enhancing services in districts and upazilas and by strengthening local governments.

Once operational, the corridor could raise Bangladesh’s GDP growth by two percentage points on average and generate 10 million jobs within a decade and help reduce poverty for around 12 million people.

ADB began study for the plan last year, when reform initiatives by the interim government across several sectors were gaining momentum.

The Manila-based multilateral lender submitted the draft report soon after the current government assumed office, while the final report is expected next month, according to officials.

Earlier this month, the draft proposal was handed over to Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, who placed it before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday.

Tarique gave the green light to the ADB’s plan with some directives, The Daily Star has learnt from people involved with the proceedings.

The proposal includes investments to upgrade existing roads, railways and waterways along the corridor, alongside projects in education, healthcare, energy and power.

It’s inevitable we will soon be back in double figures …..the dogs have stopped yapping,the news is everyday,the urgency,the dependability of coal fired power………read an article the other day that said Rooppur is going to be belting out lecky at half the price of coal………that’s minus the $15bln + construction costs 😂……I do wonder sometimes if these eco warriors think everyone is thick…..

It was basically the Aberdeen asset is not Gcm,s largest shareholder………big uplifts in holdings this past few months including Hargreaves who have now pushed polo into 4th place in the major holdings……..hbos also over 5% of the company now where my holdings are…👍

Gcm is being played……..they will not succeed unless selling can be encouraged………either by making it appear everyone has lost interest or attacking the fundamentals……..simply wallstreet tells a different story 😉

Just been reading the latest on e&p mag,China happy to help with renewables and centre for policy dialogue ramping the need for renewable,yea that’s all good but obviously China will fix terms for any investment in the solar and I’m sure the cpd think it’s buy one get one free for solar….it would cost a packet and only work part time,so where I’m going with this is,Tarique has said Bangladesh will have its renewables boosted by 10000mw over the next 5yrs….yippee that’s not going to be life changing but the phulbari solar park is projected at 2000mw so by just signing up for the open pit it gets him 1/5th of the way to his new 5yr renewables target with the stroke of a pen…..🙄

The more I think about it the more unacceptable I think it will be for Asia/Gcm /Tang to get this over the line without giving a big part of the ownership of the lease back to the Bangla government…….I know Bangladesh needs that coal in that sort of quantity to make this work and Phulbari is the only one ready…..everyone knows this,Tuku knows that a nod will make Tang a very wealthy man and the rest gets siphoned off to the Uk/US investors……I think that’s going to be very hard for them to swallow as they will always see it as a sovereign resource,that said I do believe they are respectful of the original lease,they know it’s airtight and won’t interfere with it but I’m certain the negotiations are the sticking point,I have also done my research on how little a percentage Gcm ownership can affect us as investors and even that tiny percentage as administrators of the project will more than cover the costs of 20yrs of investment in this and give us a very good return….if Tang wants it all and tries the cheap takeover I think the Bangladeshi government will make him whistle……if he’s not greedy a tiny percentage of a $100bln dollar resource will do it for me and after over 20yrs of juggling with different govts now is the time imho

Yea the Bara spontaneous combustion issue has rolled over from it being a concern last year too…..,sadly it’s how the contracts are set up….the mine has no interest in scaling back production because they are excessively/exclusively paid per ton to service Bara power station which is old,inefficient unreliable I could go on…….I think everyone knows it’s days are numbered……the interesting bit for me is how it affects Rangpur and the northern districts when it’s down…..it’s catastrophic and the people of rangpur voted for the bnp to inject some investment into the area,coal development and Teesta was promised……

I’m not going to say the bnp have let the people down but it’s early days and the investment/projects we are interested in are some of the biggest Bangladesh will ever have to sign off….I’m happy for them to get this right,keep the sovereignty of the minerals with just a fraction of admin for Gcm will make us all a fortune…..

Doze that’s what investors do who put their money into a prospect,you squeeze every avenue/scenario dry……if anyone thinks Gcm won’t happen then jog on…..if you think all this chat is hot air fantasy and we should wait fora company rns you too can jog on………if you think phulbari won’t happen or everyone should wait for a company rns that train will have left the station waaay before that rns get to be issued or that govt announcement hits the press…….

The day I think phulbari won’t happen I will sell then respectfully inform the bb,s of my reason……..today I see lots more reasons it will happen compared to when I joined in the Hasina era……

How long??…….it could come anytime,I always thought the bangla govt was leaky so we should get a move prior to that decision being implemented…….we assume it will be through govt channels first?…..maybe not!!…we could get an rns to say pc/Gcm has been invited to the table for discussions on the project?……..that rns would sink the bismark,lots of other options too…..polo puts in an offer for the whole business?……a yet unknown party puts in an offer for the whole Asia energy lease?……

That’s why we hit 12p and are witnessing a fishing expedition to shake some stock for the next level……..if you think it’s not going to happen you shouldn’t even be here!!…that would be the normal thing to do?….

Absolutely doze……this is not fantasy it’s sound economics which China (power china) know more about than anyone…….let the dogs loose on Teesta without phulbari and I will never mention it again,Teesta is stuck in procurement with the Chinese surveyors because they want the phulbari overburden……Teesta could have been started on Jan1st this year but China bogged it down……

Gosh it’s funny ,this project attracts so many people that think it won’t happen 😂😂……..they are so generous,their charity and tireless warnings are second to none to save us from ourselves…….

There’s some good people about……..I’m going to decline their offer to sell my shares for pennies,I would prefer to sell them for pounds then make a bequest to a lovely charity of their choice 🥰

Barapukuria is a much smaller basin than Phulbari and as such poses difficulty in that there's not a lot of "mine working room" meaning they'd need to place almost all the overburden material, that has to be excavated to reach coal, in permanently stacked dumps on the surface, allowing little opportunity to do any backfilling. There's also the impact of past underground mining at Barapukuria to contend with.

The most expensive issue for both the Phulbari and Barapukuria deposits would be digging the initial hole to reach first coal. On all fronts it’s more sensible to go forward from Phulbari, its initial excavation on the boundary of the two deposits, utilising the existing plant, skills, manpower and infrastructure, would also allow mining back into Barapukuria and ultimately backfilling of Barapukuria after coal extraction.

In summary mining Barapukuria as open pit, as a standalone project would neither be practical or economically viable. It would be 2030 at the earliest before any approval was given and even if it was forthcoming it would be another 3 years before first coal was reached.

The Phulbari and Barapukuria fields are an extension of each other, they are one giant field. Phulbari's feasibility studies are updated and complete. The pathway to reach first coal is already established with the EPC Contract with Asia Energy’s development partner, Power China. It's the fastest trajectory to sustainable large annual coal production.

I think we all know…..it’s getting a bit boring now…….back to the interesting bit,so Bara underground mine is primarily in the central region of the coal field,there’s no mention of shutting the deep pit so we have to think the open pit proposal is a workaround of the central area?…….now have another look at that map and it’s impossible to open pit Bara south without coming from the north and the dead deep pit central region or come up via Phulbari……..

I’ve seen no evidence yet that Bara deep pit is to be closed even though it’s a dead man walking,so either the government works through from the north or works through from Phulbari…….and the only plan I’ve seen is a work through from phulbari which has been assessed and surveyed many times

Once again have a look at this map and ask yourself mmm does Bara south look like it’s going to be a successful open pit or does it look a tad small….🙄

Great post as ever pitstock……If I can just add,I don’t think there will be anywhere near enough raw material excavated from the northern Bara (forget southern bara)proposal to help the Teesta projects miles of structural embankments,yea these nutters will say chuck in the river sand,im sorry to say I’ve also done my homework on this and that stuff that comes out the river is not sharp enough and contaminated with organic material and will only be suitable for bricklaying,block making,non structural concrete and screeding…….you can wash it all you like it’s still river sand…..so unless there’s going to be new quarries opened up I see inefficiencies that will not impress the Chinese contractors….
