The newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, has invited BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury to attend the National Prayer Breakfast.

BNP in a media statement said the three top BNP leaders have been invited to the National Prayer Breakfast, which is attended by some 3,500 guests, including international invitees from over 100 countries.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received the invitation on Friday.

It’s only a few weeks ago master energy tactician Fouzel said the interim govt wouldn’t cut subsidies even though the IMF insisted as part of their bailout loans………roll on a couple of weeks and gas is going to be hiked 150%……..once again it shows up the interim govt incompetence for saying they wouldn’t remove subsidies but it’s now clear they do not have any escape routes from this mountain of debt………they need to dig their way out of this with billions of dollars of own resources,no sticky plaster policy by these tree huggers will cut it…..

In a statement yesterday, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) highlighted that, if implemented, these measures would significantly increase production costs, putting inflationary pressure on both industries and consumers.

The DCCI cautioned that this could deter both local and foreign investment, jeopardise Bangladesh's competitive standing in the global market, and hinder the establishment of new industries.

Former FBCCI president AK Azad has highlighted the severe impact of the energy crisis on industries, with many factories struggling to survive. "We cannot sustain our businesses. Ensure smooth gas supply, and we will generate foreign currency," he said.

Azad noted that maintaining production with diesel is not feasible. "If the government increases gas supply to industrial areas, it will boost employment and revenue. If necessary, we can cook once a day and reheat the food for three meals," he added.

He made these remarks recently at a seminar titled "Solving the Energy Crisis in the Industrial Sector of Bangladesh," organized by the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) at a hotel in the capital’s Gulshan.

Azad shared a poignant moment about a businessman who recently came to him with his son. The man had partially shut down his textile factory due to gas shortages. "During Maghrib prayers, he was crying because he couldn't keep his factory running. He couldn't pay his bank loans," Azad said.

He said that many factories in areas like Narsingdi are on the brink of collapse due to the energy crisis. Factory closures are leading to worker protests and demands for jobs, which employers cannot provide.

Azad further mentioned that he recently approached the Energy Adviser, who understood the issue and discussed it with the chairman of Petrobangla. While the gas supply has improved slightly, the production costs remain unsustainable due to rising energy prices and labour costs, coupled with stagnant export prices from buyers in the US.

Bangladesh's anti-money laundering agency has asked the country's banks for details of accounts and transactions linked to Treasury minister Tulip Siddiq.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) is also seeking details related to Siddiq's sister, brother, mother as well as her aunt Sheikh Hasina, the country's former prime minister.

It comes after Siddiq was named last month in an investigation into claims Sheikh Hasina and her family embezzled up to £3.9bn from infrastructure spending in Bangladesh.

A spokesperson for Tulip Siddiq said: "No evidence has been presented for these allegations. Tulip has not been contacted by anyone on the matter and totally refutes the claims."

BNP standing committee member Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury pledged ‘a more liberalised and democratic economy' on Tuesday, saying that if voted to power, his party will ensure a level playing field for the business community.

Addressing a business delegation of British Bangladeshis, he also expressed his party’s commitment to equal treatment for both domestic and foreign investors.

“We are doing our homework, and I have been talking to business communities across the board and trying to understand, get their feedback, their problems, the prospects. Where do you go from here? It's very important. And I can assure you, as I said, the next economic environment will be one of very liberal we are going to go for serious liberalisation, as far as we are concerned,” the former commerce minister said.

“And when I say serious liberalisation, I mean serious liberalisation-democratisation of the economy. which means equal opportunity for all business people”

He said the previous 15 years of rule of the Awami League saw a patronised and oligarchic economy, which ruined the base that had been created over the years as a free market economy.

“And the level playing field for everybody was somewhat distorted over last few years, and that, of course, damaged some of the economic aspirations of the business community, investors at home and abroad”.

“I'm happy to say that that is over, that is behind us. Let us put it down to experience. Don't carry the baggage of politics. I don't believe that what has ended you have to close the chapter, start a new chapter. Instead of carrying the baggage, let's do carry the baggage. So new chapter Bangladesh 2.0 is has opened up a door of great opportunity for all of us at home in our diasporas, in the UK, so we can make the most of it”.

“And to start with the level playing field, what I mean is we must have a business environment where the domestic investors and the investors from outside should not feel that they are different.”.
