No alternative to exploring more wells to address gas crisis22 Jan 2025 16:59
Experts at a webinar on Tuesday emphasised the need for increased exploration of natural gas and local energy resources to mitigate the ongoing energy crisis and reduce reliance on imports.
“Bangladesh is facing a critical shortage of primary energy, especially natural gas, while foreign reserves are under pressure. There is no alternative to exploring local resources to reduce fuel imports,” said Khondkar Saleque Sufi, an international energy expert based in Melbourne, during the session.
The webinar, organised by Energy and Power magazine, was titled “Enhancing Gas Supplies: Exploration & Development of Domestic Sources”. Sufi, a former director of Petrobangla, presented a keynote focusing on local gas field exploration as a solution to the crisis. Other notable participants included former Petrobangla directors Engineer Kamruzzaman Khan, Ali Iqbal Md Nurullah, and Murtaza Ahmed Faruk Chisti, as well as Ocean Energy’s former vice-president M Fariduddin.
Mollah Amzad Hossain, editor of Energy and Power, delivered the welcome address.
The keynote pointed to poor planning, lack of vision, and bureaucratic inefficiencies at Petrobangla as major obstacles to offshore exploration.
Sufi noted that the nearly two-decade-long exclusive reliance on the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) for onshore exploration, without adequately equipping the state-owned body with skilled manpower and resources, has led to limited success.
