United Nations Development Program Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Gwen Lewis has said it is up to the interim government and political parties to decide when the next parliamentary election will be held in Bangladesh.

She made the statement while responding to a question on Tuesday about the BNP's demand to hold the 13th national election by the middle of this year, reports bdnews24.com.

The UNDP delegation led by Lewis held a meeting with the chief election commissioner at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon. She later spoke to the media alongside Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin.

Asked about the possible timing of the polls, she said: “That’s outside of the scope of the election mission. It’s really a decision of the political parties and Muhammad Yunus’s government. We are not touching on timelines.”

The country’s overall external debts remained over $100 billion at the end of the first quarter of the 2024-25 financial year despite the credit growth rate falling to almost one per cent, and the concerns over payment obligation loom large.

Electricity generation across Bangladesh has been reduced to less than one-fourth of the overall capacity as winter now chills the demand amid limited usages.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for holding the 13th national election by the middle of this year or in July-August.

Saying it was possible to make that happen, the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (14 January) urged the interim government to take immediate steps to prepare for the election.

"It's possible to prepare the voter list within a month and the national election can be held mid-year," he told a press conference at the BNP chairperson's office in Dhaka's Gulshan this morning.

The government does not have much activity in offshore oil and gas exploration. No company responded to the last open tender. Now Petrobangla is preparing to invite tenders again. There is no chance of discovering offshore gas fields in the next few years. There is not much momentum in onshore exploration of new gas fields. The work of increasing production by drilling new wells in old gas fields is progressing slowly. Although 50 wells were supposed to be drilled by 2025, only 16 have been drilled in three years.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, secretary of the energy and mineral resources division, told Prothom Alo that the gas crisis cannot be solved overnight. Production is decreasing, the capacity to import LNG is also limited; and the price of LNG is also increasing. There is no quick fix other than increasing production in the country. Therefore, short, medium and long-term plans are being made with emphasis on exploration and production.

The new solar power projects floated by the interim government are riskier for investors as the tender conditions allow for payment delay or defaults alongside power purchase contract cancellation without enough compensation, experts and investors said on Saturday.

They also said the cancellation of previously issued letters of intent (LOI) for 37 renewable power projects is putting at risk the new plan for 4,952 MW solar power from 52 plants as it undermines confidence of global investors like Japanese Marubeni and French Total. Sensing an increasing country risk, international lenders are set to turn away, they opined in a roundtable "Financing Solar Power Projects: Challenges and Opportunity," organised by The Business Standard at its office on Saturday.

Speakers said such erratic policies are alarming for both global and local investors.
