Following on from the successful
completion of Plutus PowerGens
power generation station in
Plymouth, Devon, Dyer &
Butler is pleased to have been
appointed as the companys sole
civil engineering contractor.
Plutus PowerGen currently has
a significant number of planning
applications lodged for power
generation stations, including
Short Term Operating Reserve
(STOR). Additional to the Plymouth
station, Dyer & Butler is also
constructing STOR stations at Cliff
Quay, Ipswich Docks, Stowmarket,
Suffolk and Crumlin, Wales (see
the article in our Western & Wales
Section).
Plutus PowerGens power
generation station is being
constructed on the former Cliff
Quay power station, which was
removed from service 30 years
ago. The substation and power
lines that were built for the former
power station are still in use,
making the site ideal for Plutus
PowerGen.
Like other Plutus PowerGen
projects, Dyer & Butler is assisting
by clearing the site, constructing
the concrete hard standing, and
the required site drainage. When
fully operational later this year, the
Cliff Quay station will be capable
of generating 40 megawatts
of power and the Stowmarket
station 20 megawatts. Both will
be providing backup power during
peak periods over the winter and
will be available to the National
Grid between 4.30pm to 10pm
seven days a week.
As with other Plutus PowerGen
sites, the Plymouth station will be
providing on demand energy as we
become more reliant on renewable
energy and less so on fossil fuel
generation. It will also provide a
backup source of energy in periods
of high demand when we have low
wind and solar power generation.
Plutus PowerGen forecasts usage
of the STOR stations to be around
200 hours per year with automated
remote access to the grid.
Ongoing success with Plutus PowerGen
