The White House coronavirus task force has proposed that the president restore inbound travel from Brazil, Britain and the European Union, CNBC reported, quoting two officials involved in the discussions. The proposal, which has not yet been accepted by President Trump, comes as infections have surged on both sides of the Atlantic.

The travel bans that also included China and Iran were announced at the beginning of the pandemic earlier this year. Most European nations have also barred Americans from entry because of the virus’s spread across the United States.

The task force was not unanimous in its decision, CNBC reported, citing officials as saying that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opposed restoring travel as “reckless.” The United States on Wednesday recorded its highest number of daily deaths — 3,140 — since the pandemic began. Public health officials have warned Americans against domestic holiday travel, which they say could exacerbate the spread.

The Reuters news agency first reported the task force’s recommendation last month and said that Trump administration officials believed lifting the ban would help struggling U.S. airlines. The industry has seen international travel fall by 70 percent, Reuters reported.
