RE: Don’t dismiss PGM`s so quickly.27 Dec 2021 22:16
...further to Mr V's comments, while we are now discussing the UK's domestic energy supply crisis, I'm gonna give my opinion...
Irrespective of what route the UK takes I don't believe that hydrogen is suitable for domestic energy supply. The bar majority of hydrogen production at this moment requires gas (fossil fuels) to produce. The infrastructure requires 'air tight' upgrades for hydrogen distribution as mentioned. Yes, current boilers are either already hydrogen ready or require minor tweaks by manufacturers to be hydrogen ready. I don't feel as if these issues combined deliver a real solution to the problems we (the UK and the rest of Earth) face moving forward.
I do not disagree about the issues with Electric based heating and the problems the current UK housing stock has accommodating current tech. Saying that, I believe that the reality is we need to move to electric for home heating for any meaningful progress to be made for environmental sustainability and energy stability for future generations.
Mr V may be not far off saying add £10k (on average) as a cost for upgrading properties with new underfloor heating and insulation to be heat pump ready... but again the fact is, heat pump or not, hydrogen boiler or not... You should be doing these things anyway as they're effective for any fuel type, property type, heating pattern and lifestyle choice.
All in reading in Mr V's post is exactly what I see it in the real world...
You need to upgrade your home to ensure it's effective at retaining heat efficiently... I doesn't matter the heating source... If your home insulation requires upgrading do that first otherwise no matter what heating source you install it will be inefficient.
Stop looking for quick wins in the wrong places.
The future is electric. Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Heat Pumps, Wind.
That said, back to Alien... It feels like people are getting frustrated at the lack of progress, we are going backwards. It also feels that some people are more focused on what would be considered a 'quick win' to prove the company is going somewhere.
I'm OK with the situation. I understand the frustration. I'm not worried though. I don't feel like any recent decision is one I may have not taken myself had I been in the driving seat.
Disappointed a little, but not worried. Holding firm.
