Vaccinations are happening, but nobody can tell you how long immunity duration might be, and as new variants emerge if the vaccines will prove as formidable as hoped. It is at least envisaged we can reduce the severity and thus the fatalities, thereby reduce the burden on the health services, because they have a lot to catch up on in other demanding areas of patient care, and each outbreak causes more delay and backlog.
Closing our borders should have been the very first defence, ask any ex military who had NBCD training at any point since the 50's, contain, isolate and quarantine, which some countries have shown is effective if done properly when case rates are low. South Korea charges £2000 upfront before arrival and enforces a quarantine, for 2 weeks, so rigid that if your hotel room door opens, an alarm sounds. Telling incomers to self isolate is a pathetic attempt at zero accountability by those saying it, and is as effective as catching a fart in a sieve.
Last week the Big Supermarket's all decided together to clamp down on the rules, and asked people to comply with masks, distance and arrows. Do not believe for one minute that this was them acting on behalf of the customer's well being and uniting as one retail social conscience, its because they are struggling with sickness rates like never before, and because many of the fit staff are having to self isolate because of contact with those who fell ill on their shifts. I have even heard of staff are being told to delete the app to ensure they can continue to work. If you are on zero hours then not deleting it jeopardises your income and ability to pay the bills, so guess what?
So why have a rant on a Sunday morning, well its because a 5 min test will change most of the above-mentioned, it would become easier to detect and react if the result is immediate, travellers and workforces could be tested and the spread could be contained and then reduced, hospitals, gp's and care homes could assess on arrival and respond accordingly, retail and the economy could see an end to lockdowns that are devastating the hopes, hard work and sacrifices already made by so many. And don't think that getting on top of this crisis would mean less testing, it will need to be an ongoing surveillance method to prevent more of the same. A 5 min test would allow the NHS hospitals clear the backlog over the coming months and years. Especially if the system they used was so adaptive that it could be effective across a broad spectrum of viral, bacterial or even cancers. Fast Diagnostics are the key to most problems, whether it be healthcare, I.T. or engineering, the faster you know the issue with confidence, the easier you can direct applicable resolutions.
So as you prepare for Sunday Lunch, ask yourself, what price for freedom, for security of the economy, for knowing that a fall on the ice may not result in the death of loved one, what price to see friends again, to eat out, to drink in the fountain of
