'AbbVie is paying $105 million upfront as well as making an undisclosed equity investment in Tizona to secure exclusive rights to TTX-030, which the two companies say is a first-in-class immuno-oncology drug that could restore and bolster immune responses against cancer cells.

CD39 is an enzyme expressed on the surface of tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating leukocytes that is responsible in part for converting extracellular ATP—the energy molecule for cells—to adenosine in the tumor microenvironment.

The enzyme is particularly prevalent where tumors are in low oxygen conditions, which seem to have an immune-suppressing effect linked to the release of large quantities of adenosine by dying cells. Blocking CD39 restricts the amount of adenosine and keeps ATP levels higher, which Tizona says leads to immune activation.

It’s a hypothesis backed up by preclinical data and yet to be tested in the clinic, but Tizona may now have the Big Pharma partner it needs to help take the project through to late-stage development'

Other reasons to be hopeful are there were no cancer vaccine finalists in the last GC despite that being one of the challenges and this is the only one in this GC.. Professor Christian Ottensmeier works closely with CRUK already... what a team Lindy has managed to bring together!! And the targets... the targets will be very attractive to CRUK plus I think it is the only finalist that is actually planning on treating patients? .... anyways BioNtech is already seeing the potential of moditope and we know how close to Genentech they are... possibly some of the 30 grand already given was spent on gathering some pre clinical modi1 modi2 combo modi3 data...

nothing it is already priced in... have you seen a huge pre GC announcement sp rise? me either... mm might play it a bit... not that they everrrrr do anything like that with their control over the spread.... never ever ha.... so really not winning is not a massive deal considering the main players scancell BioNtech and Genentech may well all work together win or no win... no far bigger news here would be our first commercial deal... however a win on GC would be a great boost and ought to generate great pr too.. not to mention the funding of modi3 development and small proof of concept trial... which is why we are all hopeful and excited to know the result... and it is one thing we know is actually coming! Win or not

Indeed and seems that is what they now plan on and want... after all RG said they wanted to be the Genentech of Europe and they have certainly done everything to make that seem possible ... well everything apart from doing the deal/s with the sleeping giant of immuno oncology :)) the company with pipelines that could fill many a big pharma .... I do wonder... will it oneday be the mighty trident of Mellman Sahin and Durrant all under one umbrella... fast forward 3 years :)

C7... if you listen from 9.00 CH stated a pilot manufacture for tox studies was just about to begin ... that was in November 2018... so hopefully that is all going well... maybe the trial could still begin H1... as for funding we were told there are enough funds to begin the trial... just maybe not to finish it lol...

anofi is set to invest €80 million ($91 million) in BioNTech and extend its cancer collaboration with the German mRNA specialist. The agreement comes as BioNTech and Sanofi prepare to start clinical development of the first cancer immunotherapy to emerge from their 2015 pact.

France’s Sanofi began working with BioNTech late in 2015 when it paid $60 million upfront for the rights to five discovery-stage immunotherapies. As the immunotherapies advance, Sanofi will pay up to $300 million in milestones per asset, making the deal a potentially significant piece of business for both companies.

With that deal now bearing fruit, Sanofi has tightened its ties to BioNTech by agreeing to invest €80 million in its partner. The investment comes a year after BioNTech raised $270 million and five months after Pfizer bought a stake in the biotech as part of a deal worth $120 million in upfront and near-term payments.

Also worth pointing the prize is quite flexible.. for instance, some research does not require £20 mill... which I think that team would not... so they get smaller prizes to cover their expenses... not all winning teams from last year got £20mill... It is great that CRUK has managed to generate such interest from not just diverse teams but funders... I can see the grand challenge becoming quite a thing...rightly so.

Looking at all finalist teams it seems only project blueprint involves market listed members... most finalists are indeed made of teams from academia or some with members from private companies... we can make of it what we will but certainly does not look bad for project blueprint...
