FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Sept. 20, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PDS Biotechnology
Corporation (Nasdaq: PDSB), a clinical-stage immunotherapy company developing
novel cancer therapies based on the Company’s proprietary Versamune(®)
T-cell activating technology, today announced its VERSATILE-002 Phase 2 study
for the treatment of advanced human papillomavirus (HPV16)-associated head and
neck cancer achieved its preliminary safety benchmark in its first 12
patients. Enrollment in the trial, which studies PDS0101 administered in
combination with KEYTRUDA(®) (pembrolizumab), will now continue to full
enrollment of the first stage of the study, which will assess efficacy in 17
checkpoint inhibitor (CPI) naïve patients and in an additional group of 21
patients who have also failed prior therapy with checkpoint inhibitors (CPI
refractory). The trial is being conducted in collaboration with Merck & Co.

VERSATILE-002 is studying two groups of HPV16-positive head and neck cancer
patients whose cancer has returned or spread. The first group has not been
previously treated with a checkpoint inhibitor (CPI naïve). The second group
of patients have failed multiple treatments including CPI therapy (CPI
refractory). As specified in the clinical trial design, the achievement of an
objective response as measured by radiographic tumor responses according to
RECIST 1.1 (tumor reduction of 30% or more) among at least four of the first
17 patients in the CPI naïve arm and at least 2 patients in the first 21
patients of the CPI refractory arm will trigger advancement to the second
stage of the study and full enrollment of the planned 95 patients.

clinical trial strengthens the evidence regarding the safety of PDS0101.
Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) generally appear to be limited to
transient, manageable local injection site reactions,” commented Dr. Lauren

medical need for more effective treatment of advanced head and neck cancer. We
believe the combination of PDS0101 and KEYTRUDA(®) has the potential to
significantly improve clinical outcomes for these patients who have limited

A small study carried out by the US National Institutes of Health (NIS) also found that the Quidel Sofia SARS Antigen Fluorescent Immunoassay LFT could be just as effective as PCR tests in detecting Covid-19 when used for serial screening conducted every three days. This study enrolled participants who either tested positive themselves or lived in close contact with a person who received a positive result.

LFTs have a clear advantage over PCRs in providing a Covid-19 diagnosis to symptomatic people. Where PCRs must be sent away to a lab to diagnose disease, meaning patients may need to wait several days for their test results, LFTs can provide a positive or negative result within 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the brand.

However, while numerous LFT brands have demonstrated their high sensitivity among symptomatic patient cohorts, they appear to repeatedly fall short of the mark in screening asymptomatic people.

Whole-of-Government Effort Will Develop Next Generation of COVID-19 Treatments, Better Prepare U.S. to Respond to Future Virus Threats

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, the Biden Administration is investing more than $3 billion to accelerate the discovery, development and manufacturing of antiviral medicines as part of the Biden Administration’s whole-of-government strategy to develop the next generation of COVID-19 treatments.

Through collaboration within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), this plan – called the Antiviral Program for Pandemics – will respond to the urgent need for antivirals to treat COVID-19 by spurring the availability of medicines to prevent serious illness and save lives. It also will build sustainable platforms for discovery and development of antivirals for other viruses with pandemic potential, helping better prepare the nation to face future viral threats.

Even as hundreds of millions of Americans get vaccinated against COVID-19 and cases, hospitalizations and death rates fall, the Biden Administration remains committed to identifying effective treatment options that can prevent people diagnosed with COVID-19 from progressing to serious illness and death. Highly effective oral antiviral medicines that can be taken at home early in the course of infection, similar to antiviral treatment for influenza, would save lives both here and abroad and prevent overwhelming surges in hospitalizations. This plan will support research to identify and accelerate availability of breakthrough treatment options to ensure the public has access to viable medicines.
