Thank you for your email of 05 May to the Foreign, Commonwealth and
Development Office (FCDO) about Russia and Ukraine.
We cannot comment on individual cases, but where Russian legislation impacts on
individuals, we advise them to seek legal advice.
The Government seeks to ensure sanctions measures are carefully targeted and
avoid unintended consequences. Measures have been designed for the maximum
impact on the Russian economy whilst protecting the financial stability and interests
of the UK and its allies.
Our sanctions are targeted at Putin and his regime. Russia's economy is used to
fund Putin's war machine and these sanctions are designed to cripple and degrade
that machine, which is currently engaged in an illegal and brutal invasion of a
sovereign nation within Europe.
We are not giving a running commentary on which sanctions may or may not be in
the pipeline, as it risks reducing their impact. That being said, nothing is off the table.
The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), which is part of HM
Treasury, helps to ensure that financial sanctions are properly understood,
implemented and enforced in the United Kingdom.
Further information on UK sanctions relating to Russia and the UK Sanctions List of
which individuals/entities have been sanctioned by the UK Government can be found
on gov.uk.
Yours sincerely,
