I rarely post. I don't know much about shares. I do know this, I sold at the peak of £28. I didn't have that many shares.
I'm not claiming prophetic sight but my son worked for the company in a lowly position and I liked the concept.
I did OK and there were predictions of £40 per share at the peak but I needed the cash and thankfully did sell at the right time.
I continue to watch this share, as a spectator.
I concluded that if ocado can't make a profit during lockdown, when every slot is sold and the website crashes then there's a problem. I know the technology and overseas deals are where many believe the future lies and yes they do recoup from every sale when the cfc' s are up and running.
However, the way I see things, (maybe simplistic) is every preciously struck deal finances the next round of building cfcs for the next deal. Going round in circles like that will never produce a profit imo.
It's smoke and mirrors, it's the emperor's new clothes, it's jam tomorrow. This parrot is dead.
Cassandra,
Maybe the distribution costs could be lowered by getting customers to collect from the cfcs by car in a click and collect type method like....supermarkets? Surely this would greatly decrease the distribution costs?
£11billiion and not a single penny of profit in 22 years. Sometimes someone has to point out its an emperors new clothes moment. I too could invent amazing tech if I'd had a pot of billions. It would make my breakfast and deliver it to my bed......sounds familiar.
There are people on this board who actively encouraged people not to sell at the peak of almost £29. I'm glad I ignored that advice, although I nearly held on due to the bravado shown by some (vp). Luckily I made a good few quid because I had a moment and thought how has a company that's never made a penny got to this price ? I've never looked back. Best to all, even the deluded cheerleaders
Hi,
I think you really may over estimate the amount of automation in the cfcs. Most packing is still done by people and remember 2 cfcs don't have robots. I think the pingdemic will affect Ocado as much as any other retail business.
My son was actually taken off his route as a driver during the start of lockdown last year a number of times and redeployed to work in the warehouse due to dire staff shortages caused by staff having to isolate. This happened to a number of drivers.
Also the robots they have don't drive the vans. If a number of drivers are pinged it doesn't matter who picks or packs the shopping....it's not going anywhere!
Hi all,
Firstly I'd like to point out the 2 cfcs with no robots in place have never suffered fires.
Secondly is Andover up and running yet ? I might be a bit behind on this but I didn't think it was.
I'd also like to raise that small investors WILL do research but this site features prominently when googling the ocado share price. The euphoric, evangelical applauding of ocado on this board can influence people. I have made no secret that I sold my shares, luckily, last year at the very apex of the price with a tidy profit. I'm not too proud to admit I nearly bought into the ott positivity on this board about a £40 per share price looming.
I do believe there's a lot of bigging the share up on this board, far greater than anyone derailing it. I no longer hold any in ocado, happily
Hi Shaggers,
I assume from your response you use it, I don't and never have.
All I know from my sunshine is it's not as great as one would expect from a technology company.
I worked for 40 years for global parcel delivery companies in national managerial roles.
All I know is it's the final step in the chain, the arrival of the goods that matters.
The goods could be handled by sanitised flying monkeys or robots on their journey but if the last step falters the whole chain is meaningless.
My point is if the tech doesn't reach to every point in a long chain the middle part is almost without value.
Hi Value,
You are over confident on the amount of robotics Ocado use.
At least 2 of the Cfcs you counted in are automated but no robots. Just a quick look on Wikipedia about ocado gave me that information.
I invested in Ocado a number of years back at around £2 per share when my son started working there as a driver. I did my research then and put £20k in.
I sold, luckily, at the peak last year.
I used to believe in ocado but from the stories my son tells I believe the peak has gone and I'm glad I got out with a very healthy profit.
It seems a smoke and mirrors set up now. A supermarket that can't make a profit, even in optimal circumstances or a technology company that is highly human dependent.
As anyone in the delivery space knows its getting the product to the door, the fulfilment of the order that matters. Currently Ocado can't provide a satnav that works accurately to its drivers let alone a number of other issues. I do my research, there's some interesting groups on social media that provide a good insight.
I'm glad I sold when I did.
