Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Microsoft boss Bill Gates used a summit in London to announce a partnership that will invest a combined £400m in green technology in the UK.
The UK government and the Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, a public- private-sector partnership investment network founded by Gates, will each invest £200m in funding over 10 years, focused on areas such as green hydrogen, long-term energy storage, sustainable aviation fuels and direct air capture of carbon dioxide.
The government has already committed £200m for such UK projects, which will now be matched with £200m from the private sector.
Johnson said on Tuesday the UK would only reach “ambitious climate goals if we rapidly scale up new technologies in areas like green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels — technologies that seemed impossible just a few years ago”.
The partnership with the UK will accelerate the deployment of these critical climate solutions, “helping to make them more affordable and accessible”, said Gates.
Johnson used the Global Investment Summit, where the announcement was made, to call for fresh investment in the UK. He welcomed the combined $24tn of funds at the event, and pointed to the importance of working with the private sector on achieving the net zero ambitions of COP26.
