Shorting the UK centric stocks on the FTSE makes sense if you want to play Brexit. There is no point shorting the Index as it is not UK specific and typically hasn't been since even before the crash,.to some extent reflecting the changing economy in the UK to a service led one. The bar banks and house builders the bulk of FTSE components are internationally oriented energy tobacco etc But this is finessing, the real money is being made in the trading of currency pairs and the swaps markets.
