Kromek, the company focused on radiation detection technology in medical, security and nuclear markets, announced its interim results for the six months ended 31 October 2016.
I know very little about this company – not sure I’ve heard of it or seen it mentioned before, so this should be interesting.
The numbers look decent. Revenues are 19% to £3.8 million from £3.2 million, which is solid progress. The company have maintained a healthy gross profit margin of 53% in line with previous years. The company do not make a profit – however, in this period, the loss before tax has reduced by £1.2 million to £1.8 million. Overall, it has been a good 6 months for the company. The key financial metrics are all moving in the right direction.
The company generates its revenue from product sales. For this period, Revenue generated from product sales accounted for 74% of total sales compared with 57% in the previous quarter. This is good sign. Clearly defined products should be easy to sell assuming the demand is there, which here it suggests it is. This would hopefully also lead to a more stable revenue model as well. The remaining revenue came from R&D consulting services, which are less scalable – tick for the management from me!
I’m beginning to like this business!
As mentioned, the business operates in there distinct areas: medical, security and nuclear.
The medical division won a 5-year $12.6 million contract in H2 2015/16. The company will provide monitors assist in detecting Bone Marrow Density, which allows for improved diagnosis and better treatment. The company have also entered into a two-year $560,000 contract with an existing costumer. Post-period, the company was awarded repeats contracts by three of its existing partners.
The Nuclear Detection team currently has a $1.6 million contract with US Defence agencies and also recently won a $430,000 contract with the UK Ministry of Defence.
Security scanning is probably the smallest area of the three, but the company has won contracts from an Asian airport group as well as a couple of other smaller value contracts.
Overall, I quite like the sound of this. The products seem to have plenty of application. The company are dealing with some big contracts and respected names including government departments. There is clearly multiple uses to what they are doing. Kromek label themselves are the ‘market leader’ in the space – it would appear they are.
Outlook
The future certainly looks bright.
The Group is making good progress on the delivery of $35.5m of new orders won over the past 18 months, which provides good revenue visibility for the current financial year as well as the next. The Group already has significant visibility over revenue accounting for more than 85% of market expectations for full year 2016
