The best things in life are worth waiting for, or at least that seems to be the case with Kromek, a pioneering radiation detection expert. Since listing on AIM at 51p back in October 2013, the company has not only been busily refining and field testing its next generation CZT (cadmium zinc telluride) technology, but importantly also securing a raft of new orders.
Indeed, over the past 18 months alone $35.5m of contracts have been secured, equivalent to a Book-to-Bill ratio of 2.31x (at current exchange rates). This has materially enhanced the firm’s forward visibility, and sets the stage for perhaps years (if not decades) of strong double digit growth - underpinned by buoyant demand for its patented products (74% of H1’17 sales) that address unmet needs in multi $billion markets, such as in medical imaging (see below).
Here, Kromek has already landed prestigious BMD and SPECT agreements with several blue-chip OEMs, which together are forecast to more than double revenues from circa £2.7m in FY17 to £6.5m next year.
Huge potential in ‘dirty bomb’ detection
However, to us the biggest near-term opportunity relates to the further roll-out of its portable D3S ‘dirty bomb’ detectors. To date Kromek has shipped 10,000 such devices (see below) to the US Dept of Defense (DoD). And, following successful large-scale trials in New York, Washington and New Jersey, we believe there is a real possibly of supplying 100ks more over the coming periods. In fact, to give you a sense of magnitude, we understand the DoD is considering deploying the technology across a significant number of key cities, which we believe could each generate north of $10m in turnover. Plus, there shouldn’t be any lack of financial support or political will either, given incoming President, Donald Trump, made Homeland Security one of his top election promises.
