Mick I'm saying if the Chinese are daft enough to waste money making cheap solar panels we should take advantage. There isn't a fixed supply of jobs, economics is not a closed game. Cheap solar panels might be good for manufacturers who use solar panels in a value add sense. Again you are looking at trade as a closed game which is wrong headed. One lot of ppl losing their jobs in something unproductive frees them up to do something productive for which their is a demand. By your reckoning we should subsidise ppl to dig and fill holes, that is largely what we do as a society unfortunately.

Which is to say the cost of cheap solar panels is borne by Chinese consumers not us. And it is an act of gross stupidity to put tariffs on this produced below economic cost. If the Chinese want to subsidise our economy let them it free us up to do productive things higher up the value curve.

Auson if you look where the stations for HS2 are placed almost no time will be saved with hs2. Imagine what Mrs T would say if HS2 crossed her desk? She'd suggest private investors have a go.

Of course it's a balance, what government does it not is up to voters, Keynes himself was of the view government should never readily exceed 30% of GDP. He was also of the view interventions should be temporary in nature. He is often cited by the left but actually he would not advocate things like HS2 in anyway at all.
