I guess the question is when did that mechanical phase of buying kick in?. From the graph it looks like the run from 60->160p was based on the fundamentals changing with the GVMT funding, and 160p->200p was based on the index effect. Hopefully that means we settle out around here but who knows.

Wrennus, I just looked at Siemens fleet of H2 compatible plants and all the curretn ones appear to be running a blend, so more work is needed to get to 100% hydrogen burning.

Better in what regard? I've done some system level cost modelling on this, and found it more cost effective to cover the peak demand with cheap gas plant (that only runs for double digit hours each year) and offset it with a small capacity of carbon capture running constantly, than to try and cover the peak demand with hydrogen based generation.

That seems sensible, like a range extender, only need a small fuel cell that's topping up the battery, and doesn't have to meet the maximum power requirement of the vehicle. Use the battery most of the time since it's much more efficient.

Smelting is already in the North of Scotland. And it's not the snow you have to worry about it's the campervans! Other than that you make a compelling case.

It'll make more sense when the surplus periods are longer (and national in scale), but we're not there yet.

Wookiemonster, the problem is just economical - you don't want to pay for an electrolyser and only have it running 10% of the time when there is a local surplus of power.

A fuel cell car will cost roughly 2X as much to fill up as an EV - that's pretty hard to get past for me at least.

You're right that the FB could keep running at reduced efficiency, but as the concentration of V ions available to be charged/discharged hits a certain point you just can't get enough of them to the electrode quickly enough and the voltage drops sharply. The alternative is to taper off the power, which I think Invinity might do IIRC, but at some point you would be producing less power than the pump and other auxilliaries require.

On the power/energy rating, you're right that adding LIB cells will keep the same energy power ratio at the cell level (probably 0.5-1h duration), but the actual duration at the system level would likely be defined by the power capacity of the inverter, the grid connection or the PV (say). Thanks for sharing, nice to see the temperature tolerance being highlighted. I'm not sure what's going on with the graphic at the top though - is that meant to be a VFB?

Also irritating that the article claims full depth of discharge possible with vanadium - really you can only use the middle 70-80% of the SOC window, as the electrolyte just becomes too energy-dilute after that.

VFB suppliers need to focus on the actual benefits rather than this old trope and the one about decoupling energy and power, which you can do just as easily with LIB.

Not sure what's worse, the money lost or the time wasted reading this board.
