more to chew on22 Jul 2019 01:50
Perhaps I can better illustrate to you, George, your particular brand of inconsequentiality. I play a lot of poker, and so often at the average low stakes table there is invariably one guy who fancies himself a bit of a playa. Trouble is, he plays a hand an hour and yet the rest of the time feels compelled to share with the the table his analysis of every hand, which invariably consists of a the blindingly obvious combined with pointless trivialities, presented by someone simultaneously convinced of his own brilliance. Oh yeah, and just in case anyone isn't cringing sufficiently, he'll sprinkle in some anecdotes from his personal life and laugh at his own jokes. Still, this guy's profile and yours don't completely merge until he actually plays a hand. Even though its obvious to everyone that he only has a rudimentary understanding of the game, every £2 decision involves long stretches where he affects deep thinking, complete with crinkled brow and (more) banal commentary. Ultimately of course, he invariably folds his hand, since the point for him is never the challenge of trying to outplay his opponent, but the attention he gets while pretending to do so.
