James24,
No you only realise a capital gain/loss once you sell.
In regards to capital loss, after selling, you can offset this against any gains in the future and this can be carried forward to next year and beyond. I think this has to be recorded though and not entirely sure how to do that.
Investingnewb,
I believe it’s based on the average purchased price of the shares, I might be wrong though, so it is worth checking.
As an example, invest 70k in BP at £2 35000 shares and your up 50%. At £3, 105k in total.
You sell two thirds for 70k that’s made up as follows:
Initial investment: £46,666
Capital gain:£23,333
But, you need to check this.
Another point , check with your platform provider how long it takes for funds to be withdrawn and/or available for transfer into your isa.
I’m with HL and although the funds can be invested straight after a sale, I’m unable to withdraw or transfer for several days.

I guess the charts aren’t always 100%, gaps are not always filled! Geng however has, with very precise accuracy, called the dips. It’s also worth noting that he’s a trader. I prefer to hold and not trade.
Caitlin, BP ADR is trading at just over $24, given the exchange rate, its flat at 2.95 after the conversion.
Fingers crossed the Brent price goes over $55 and we open and finish over £3. That would top off what has been a fantastic week.
