In the case of British nuclear the market correctly ruled that coal fire is a much cheaper way to produce electricity given Britain sits on a mountain of it. Nuclear power only came to be via colossal state subsidies after ww2. It's only appealing now due to the green cobblers demonising plant food and our futile efforts at windmills, China aren't fooled their electricity comes from coal.

Whereas if we fracked or had conventional gas the fuel would be cheaper (no liquefaction/transport fees) and there would be employment.
