Fleccy respect, the issue is we have duplication of base load. We use gas when it's windless then switch these off when it's windy. Given renewables are a huge capital investment this intermittency doesn't add up given the additional complexity they add to the grid. A fossil fuels powered grid, coal gas will always be cheaper as the grid is far less complex and those things far more energy dense. I worked in demand forecasting for the grid some decades ago before taking up a career in banking.
