Generally speaking, as a company grows, institutions will increase their ownership. Conversely, insiders often decrease their ownership over time.
Institutions typically measure themselves against a benchmark when reporting to their own investors, so they often become more enthusiastic about a stock once it's included in a major index.
Investors should note that institutions actually own more than half the company, so they can collectively wield significant power.
Hedge funds own 9.9% of Synairgen. That worth noting, since hedge funds are often quite active investors, who may try to influence management. Many want to see value creation (and a higher share price) in the short term or medium term. Polygon Global Partners LLP is currently the largest shareholder, with 9.9% of shares outstanding. With 7.8% and 5.5% of the shares outstanding respectively, Polar Capital Holdings plc and UBS Asset Management are the second and third largest shareholders.
Insiders collectively own UK£7.0m worth of the UK£322m company. Some would say this shows alignment of interests between shareholders and the board.
The general public, with a 31% stake in the company, will not easily be ignored. While this group can't necessarily call the shots, it can certainly have a real influence on how the company is run.
Just a recap.
