Matthew Moulding’s beauty business has offloaded two struggling divisions to stem losses of about £15 million.
THG has sold its OnDemand division to a new entity backed by its management team and Gordon Brothers, the investment firm, and has agreed a sale of its cycling equipment business ProBikeKit to Frasers Group.
The two units made a combined loss of £14.6 million last year and THG proceeds of £4 million from the divestments.
The announcement sent shares of THG, formerly known as The Hut Group, down by 10p, or 9.3 per cent, to 97p last night.
The company said the OnDemand business would remain a customer of its Ingenuity platform, which allows third parties to sell products directly to consumers.
Moulding, 51, founded The Hut Group in 2004 with John Gallemore, 54, his fellow former Phones4u executive. Moulding has built the group into an online beauty and nutrition business with more than 8,000 employees and best known for its range of Myprotein sports nutrition products.
It was popular with investors when it floated in London at an opening valuation of £5.4 billion, but corporate governance concerns, questions about its valuation and financial losses have combined to push the value down to £1.3 billion. THG appointed Sue Farr, 67, as its senior independent director to strengthen its corporate governance in April after bringing in Lord Allen of Kensington, 66, a former chief executive of ITV, to replace Moulding as chairman in 2022. Moulding has remained with the business as its chief executive.
THG announced in January that it was looking to sell lossmaking businesses after it had been knocked by a slowdown in sales over Christmas. The company conducted a review of underperforming categories so that executives could focus on its core beauty and nutrition brands.
Moulding said: “I am delighted to see management and Gordon Brothers continuing the fantastic work of the OnDemand team and I have no doubt the ProBikeKit business will continue to thrive under Frasers Group.
“We will remain close partners with both the OnDemand management team and Frasers Group through continued Ingenuity services.”
