When you get a special dividend the Shares drop by the same amount. When National Grid gave a special dividend last year, they reconsolidated the shares ie kept the price the same and cut the amount of shares. In theory both the old shares + the new shares should equal the value of your holding that you have now.Don't get too excited about this.
